The guide covers a range of navigation techniques, including working out magnetic north, understanding contours, distance and heights and reading and interpreting maps. There is also advice on identifying roads, tracks and footpaths and both natural and man-made features of the landscape such as vegetation, rivers and streams and outcrop and scree. Detailed advice on planning a walk using a map and compass is also featured, along with practical guidance on walking using a compass.
